What we do
We are a university-based research group who works towards restoring fish passage and rehabilitating freshwater environments in Australia. Human-constructed dams and weirs obstruct fish from travelling freely in freshwater environments, blocking critical migration and movement needed to find spawning and feeding grounds. These obstructions have led to massive decreases in the health, abundance, and diversity of native freshwater fish populations. To face this formidable challenge, our team works on developing novel fishway solutions through integrating expertise in hydraulic engineering with fish ecology.
Our Tube Fishway systems use pipes with internal water flow as bypass pathways for fish to travel over dams and weirs, a bit like a safe “fish cannon”.
Our team works across design, testing and deployment stages of these pipe fish passage systems, which are cost-effective and energy efficient. We work both in the lab, running experiments using live fish with our models, and also field experiments deploying Tube Fishways at a diverse range of dams and weirs within Australian freshwater environments.
Our team represents a balance of demonstrated on-ground track record, practical management expertise of fisheries and hydraulic structures, partnerships with governments, communication experience, state of the art science, and ecosystem expertise with extensive knowledge of wetlands and rivers ecosystems in Australia.
